Karlin, Bratzlav, Lubavich, Ger, Lublin - hundreds of little towns were
like holy books. Each place was a pattern, an aspect, a way in Jewishness.
When a Jew mentioned the name of a town like Medzihbozh or Berdytshev,
it was as though he mentioned a divine mystery. Holiness had become
real and so concrete that it was perceptible like beauty.
"Why do you go to see the rebbe?" someone asked an eminent
scholar who, although his time was precious, would trudge for days to
visit his rebbe on the Sabbath.
"To stand near him and watch him lace his shoes," he answered.
